She was active in various New Orleans clubs such as the Quarante Club and the Arts and Crafts Club. She married Johnston at age 40 in 1888, and he was seventeen years her senior. His first wife had died in 1885. A wealthy woman, Margaret Avery Johnston lived always between Avery Island and the Crescent City, and numbered among her family members the McIlhennys, who created Tabasco sauce.
