Gavino Gutierrez, 1849-1919

Continued from entry on list of those mentioned in the letters

….

Gutierrez made JLN the godmother of his daughter Aurora, for whom JLN arranged a scholarship to Newcomb College. Aurora attended from 1894 to 1897, leaving to marry D. B. McKay, a journalist and later mayor of Tampa. In the early 1910s, their daughter, Aurora McKay, donated a book to Newcomb College given to her by her mother telling of the family relationship with JLN. That book is now part of the JLN Book Collection. Through these connections written with the slightest cues into letters and books, we have an understanding of the diversity of people JLN knew as friends. A few of her letters to Gavino Gutierrez are found in the court case volumes.
